Chicago IT jobs could grow during the near future.

A recent report from IT Monitor, which surveys technology professionals throughout the country, found that the IT industry has stabilized and could soon see some growth. On top of that, the industry has seen a decrease in job cuts, proving that companies are doing better.

The survey found that only about 10 percent of large companies plan to reduce IT staff during the next six months, which is a decrease from the 17 percent of companies that planned to do so in February. The number of medium-sized companies planning to reduce IT staff decreased from 9 percent in April to 7 percent during August.

Despite the fact that the area continued to lose jobs last month, the Chicago unemployment rate declined for the first time in 11 months.

During July, the Chicago-Naperville-Joliet area saw its unemployment rate decrease from 11.3 percent to 10.7 percent, the same rate the area had during May. Even though this is the first time the local unemployment rate has declined since September 2008, it was still higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent, and the area continued to lose jobs.

The Chicago area had a total non-farm employment of 3,697,500 workers during July, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 3,715,500 workers during June and a 4.7 percent decrease from last year.

Even though healthcare has long been considered a recession-proof industry, those looking for Chicago nurse jobs are finding that might not necessarily be the case.

It seems that many recent graduates are having trouble finding nursing jobs at any of the medical centers in the Chicago area.

“We are definitely seeing a decrease in openings for new grads,” Vicki Keough, acting dean of Loyola University Chicago’s Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Certified nursing assistants are responsible for giving personal care to patients in hospitals and nursing homes, according to an article by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

They work under the direction of nursing and medical staff. CNA duties often include giving baths and back rubs; making hospital beds; carrying meal trays; helping patients in and out of bed; taking temperature, pulse, respiration, weight and blood pressure readings; answering calls; writing notes on patients’ charts and taking appropriate action during emergencies.

Two prominent entities are teaming up to offer more Chicago summer jobs.

The City Colleges of Chicago and the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services are working together to provide hundreds of youths with summer jobs this year. The jobs are being funded by $15 million the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act gave to DFSS, which then provided CCC with $945,000 to fund the program.

About 450 people between the ages of 19 and 24 have been provided with summer jobs, which range from positions at Washburne Culinary Institute’s Sikia Restaurant to administrative positions at the district office and colleges. Overall, the program aims to place young people in areas where they already have an interest or prior experience and to allow summer workers to explore career programs available at CCC.
