Chicago Media Jobs Cut

Monday, December 29th, 2008

In a world filled with online capabilities, many traditional newspapers are suffering. The City of Chicago is no exception and many Chicago media jobs are being cut.

In a city that once had more than 11 daily newspapers, only two remain - the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. According to an article by The Associated Press, the Sun-Times continues to lose money every quarter and the Tribune’s parent company is facing $13 billion in debt. Both papers are facing budget cuts and many newsroom jobs are being cut, and print editions of the paper have decreased.

Much of the newspaper industry’s problems come from the fact that many people don’t bother to buy an actual paper, but instead access news online. And because people aren’t buying papers, companies are less likely to advertise in them. If either Chicago newspaper were to go under, the Sun-Times seems to be the more likely candidate, as the company has cut $50 million this year and saw a third-quarter loss of $168 million.

Chicago Tourism Jobs Could be Created by Marketing Quad Cities

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

A new interest in visiting Chicago and surrounding cities could create new Chicago tourism jobs.

The Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau
recently hired Ruf Strategic Solutions to create a report on people interested in visiting the Quad Cities, which include Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, and Moline, East Moline and Rock Island, Ill. The results showed that 1 million potential tourists - including 300,000 in the Chicago area - would be interested in visiting, according to an article by MarketWatch.

“We want to understand the people who travel to the Quad Cities so we can market more effectively to them and find even more visitors like them,” Charlotte Morrison, vice president of marketing and communications, said in the article. “Ruf helped us understand the travel habits of our tourists: how long they stay here, their level of disposable income and what activities they enjoy while on vacation.”

Chicago Manufacturing Jobs Lost, Workers Taking a Stand

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

One group of employees who lost their Chicago manufacturing jobs is taking a stand.

Republic Windows and Doors closed its doors and fired several workers last week when Bank of America cut the company’s credit line, preventing it from coming up with employee severance and vacation pay. Because the company gave employees no notice they would be losing their jobs, many are taking a stand and refusing to leave the factory, according to an article by the Los Angeles Times.

“We need only what is promised to us, nothing more, nothing less,” Apolinar Cabrera, a 17-year veteran of the plant, said in the article. “I know the economy is bad …. but this just isn’t right to do this to us.”

Service Jobs in Chicago’s Suburbs Facing Cuts

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Many service jobs in Chicago’s suburbs are being cut, and municipalities are bracing to see less tax revenue as the economy continues to dwindle.

According to an article by the Chicago Tribune, a recent survey showed that 48 of 78 municipalities in the State of Illinois are planning to eliminate positions through attrition or layoffs because of budget restraints. Many officials, employees and residents are worried they will be directly affected by this.

In some places, such as Barrington and Orland Park, the cutbacks are going to affect how much public works employees can accomplish, including plowing and salting major roads, which could end up being a hazard to motorists. Barrington plans to lay off 13 employees and leave at least three jobs unfilled, resulting in a cut of about 10 percent of its workforce. Elgin, which laid off 16 workers last month, plans to cut 38 more positions through attrition and the elimination of unfilled jobs.
